He
wears red, white and blue. He fought against the Nazis in WWII. He symbolizes
freedom.
He's
Captain America, a scrawny kid turned super soldier with superhuman strength
and physical prowess. This guy grew up on the streets and perseveres to keep
fighting everyday.
Yet
the question remains: is the Captain a conservative? Do his actions reflect the
values and character of a real man with conservative beliefs?
Let's
examine that claim.
In
"Captain America: The Winter Soldier," Capt (Chris Evans) questions
whether Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) and SHIELD should build helicarriers to
launch with first-strike capabilities.
This
may appear that Captain is acting against America's best interests, but he's
not. Conservatives want smaller government. Liberals don't.
Capt
knows the helicarriers would give the government more power over the American
people so that they can't defend themselves. Turns out he’s right because
HYDRA had infiltrated SHIELD and corrupted it from within.
Capt’s
also optimistic. One of America's core values is self-reliance. The good kind
of self-reliance means that a man or woman is able to get things done without
asking for help. Don't get me wrong; there are some things where you need to
rely on others. But you can't go through life forever needing someone to hold
your hand because you weren't able to do it yourself.
Cap
shows both cases of self-reliance. He works with others as a team, but is still
able to beat the bad guys on his own, given the situation.
Finally,
Cap supports the rights of individuals over big government. The whole plot of
the "Civil War" comic books and the third Captain America film is
that the government wants to subjugate superheroes. That means they lose their
free will to do what must be done in order to save people.
Like
individual private citizens, superheroes shouldn't conform themselves to a
single government. Governments change. So do presidential administrations. They
have to decide who needs their help the most, something they would lose if they
follow the rules of a government. Superheroes should be able to make divisions
free from politics--whether it's form personal beliefs or party lines.
So
yes, Captain America is a conservative and a die-hard American.
